Dear Cipriani Families,

chinese_new_year.jpgHappy Chinese New Year and welcome to the Year of the Tiger!  Although I was unable to attend, I heard there was a fantastic Chinese New Year celebration hosted by Cipriani After School Care last evening.  Many of our students are learning Mandarin and  learning about Chinese customs and culture, thanks to Teacher Li and her talents.  Check out the student work on display in the MUR; you’ll see samples of Chinese writing and art work everywhere.  Thank you, CASC, Inc.!

heart_kindness.jpgOur character trait for the month of February is Kindness.  This is a great month for showing kindness; the week of February 8-12th is Random Acts of Kindness Week.  Of course, Valentine’s Day is on February 14th, and this is a day to make an extra effort to show kindness to those we love.

Next week, at Monday Morning Meeting, students  representing each grade will present their thoughts about what it means to be a kind person.   The representatives are these students:

First grade:  Greg McCulloh
Second grade: Francesca D’Urzo
Third grade:  Alexis Tanase
Fourth grade: Darya Buchholz
Fifth grade:  Noah Suissa

Their comments will be published in next week’s Soup. If you notice your child showing an act of kindness, big or small, give him/her big hug make sure they know you noticed!

blue_birthday_present.jpgHappy Birthday to the following Cipriani Wildcats:  Muneeb Fallaha, Blake Masters, Mako Oshiro, Thomas Riley, Giovanna Delgadillo, Henry Chung, Lauren Bazigian.

handshake.jpgSAVE THE DATE:   The “Talk it Out” Parent Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, February 24th, 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the MUR.   This is open to all parents, grades K-5.  Reservations are NOT required, but please RSVP so we have enough materials on hand  for everyone.   View the “Talk It Out” flyer for more information and how to RSVP in the flyer section of Cipriani Soup.

“Talk It Out” teaches basic communication skills that can be used in any context, and throughout life.  It gives us a common language and reference for “talking out” our differences, and most of all, keeps us  mindful our goal for respecting others and ourselves, whether at school, at home, at after  care, or anywhere.

Staff and students are being trained to “Talk it Out” when conflict arises at school.  The parent workshop will give you tips for supporting these skills at home, and for empowering your student with good communication skills.

LOOK_icon.jpgNew Section in the Cipriani Soup:   Look below at the new section titled Teacher Tips.   In Teacher Tips, you’ll find hints from our talented teachers or good articles they have found, for how to help your child get the most out of their education.   Topics will include building healthy habits, study and  homework  tips,  tips for encouraging independence, and other topics of interest.  Do you have a particular educational topic you’re curious about?  Email your child’s teacher with your ideas.

I hope you and your loved ones are staying healthy during this brisk and wet  winter weather.  I look forward to seeing you all throughout the coming month.

Have a good week,
Mrs. Gavidia

We encourage you to attend our General Membership meetings (next meeting is Thursday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m.), and to participate in, or help organize, one of our many events and programs.  It's a great way to get to know your fellow parents and your child's schoolmates.  If you are interested in becoming further involved, we invite you to consider serving on the Executive Board.

Fundraising Update

Thanks to all the parents and businesses who have donated so far this school year, our education foundation has already raised $400,000!  This amounts to approximately $130 per child in the district.  It is a record for this time of year!  However, this is the hardest financial year yet, so *everybody* needs to donate by June 30th to reach the "beyond $1 Million" goal and keep our schools great.

The suggested annual donation
is at least $500 per child (far less than what most of us paid for a single month of preschool tuition!). Please go to www.schoolforce.org and make your donation today.

Do You Have PR/Communications Experience?

School-Force is looking for additional volunteers to help with communications.  If you have communications/PR experience, the foundation communications team would love to have you on board and learn from your expertise.   Please email communications@schoolforce.org if interested.

Questions or concerns? Need to confirm your donation history? Want to find
out how you can get more involved in our education foundation?
Contact us at marla@beckerlipton.com or kmwerner7@yahoo.com.

School-Force is a volunteer-run, non-profit 501(c)(3) educational foundation. Your donation to School-Force is tax deductible. (Tax ID #91-215965) For more information about School-Force and the programs it funds, please visit http://www.schoolforce.org/

Is My Child Getting Enough Sleep?

Did you know that 69% of American children aren’t getting enough sleep?  Research shows that  nearly 70% of children under the age of 10 experience some sort of sleep disorders, including insomnia, nightmares, sleep walking and sleep apnea.  Here are some tips on getting kids to snooze.

Toddlers should get 12-15 hours of sleep per day, including one nap.  Preschoolers and kindergartners, without napping, need 11-13 hours of sleep.  Older school age children need 10-11 hours of sleep, generally through fifth grade. Teenagers should get at least 8-1/2 hours of sleep, and may need over 9!

Guidelines for school age kids:
•    Make “checking in” a part of the bedtime routine. Ask about your child’s day-the good, the bad, and the ugly-and allow your child time to share any worries. Be consistent about bed times and limits.
•    Don’t give in to “five more minutes, please!”  This is especially true as demands on a child’s time increase because of activities and homework.
•    Keep the TV and computers out of the bedroom! Avoid TV, video games, etc. just before bed.  TV at night has been linked to bedtime resistance, difficulty falling asleep and night time anxiety.
•    Avoid caffeine in food and sodas.
•    Take note of how much sleep seems to work for your child.  Be on the lookout for cranky behavior during the day, or over-tiredness at night. Make sure your child is rested and remember that needs will change as kids get older.
•    If you notice signs of sleep disorders or daytime sleepiness, don’t hesitate to contact a doctor.
•    For more on this topic, go to www.sleepfoundation.org

Cheerful Artwork on a "Stormy" Day

Last week, second graders in Mr. Mock's room analyzed folk artist Nellie Mae Rowe's artwork, "Stormy Weather" (aptly named since the lesson happened on a cold, rainy day). The students discussed organic and geometric shapes, patterns, and curving lines.  They also located contrasting warm and cool colors.  Finally, they sketched bugs and small animals and drew patterns around their names.  The class enjoyed using oil pastel to create a lively mood in their compositions.

Students in rooms 13, 14 and 16 decorated their names with vibrant oil pastels using patterns inspired by Nellie Mae Rowe.
